Learning and Care

As a parent or carer of a young child, you are the main influence on your child’s development. Early childhood learning and care services exist to help you with this important role.

Learning and care services offered by Children’s Centres operate under the National Quality Framework (NQF). The NQF aims to raise the quality of services across Australia through its National Quality Standard. The standard includes the Early Years Learning Framework, a curriculum framework to guide staff in developing quality learning and care programs for children.

In South Australia children are entitled to access 4 terms of government funded preschool in the year before they start school. Preschool programs are play-based educational programs designed and delivered by qualified teachers using the national curriculum framework. If your child turns 4 before 1 May, they can start preschool on the first day of Term 1 in that year. If your child turns 4 on or after 1 May, they will start preschool on the first day of Term 1 the following year. Aboriginal children and children under guardianship of the minister are entitled to attend preschool once they turn 3. Children with additional needs and/or disability may be able to start preschool up to 2 terms before they would usually start. This is known as early entry.
